IBDP Mathematics Tutor Dubai

Focused IBDP Mathematics tutoring in Dubai · Sharjah · Abu Dhabi · Muscat · London, including AA / AI SL / HL support and specialist guidance for the IB Internal Assessment.

The problem behind the mark

Reasoning across the full IB course.

IBDP Mathematics is more than its Internal Assessment. Across AA and AI, students need to reason, transfer ideas, and explain their mathematical decisions.

The 45-minute diagnostic helps us understand how the student approaches unfamiliar questions before recommending support.

FOCUSED SUPPORT / NOT GENERIC HOMEWORK HELP

What the work can focus on

Support course topics in IBDP Mathematics AA and AI at SL or HL.
Help the student understand how to evaluate their own exploration question, using separate examples and within school rules.
Teach students to explain and evaluate their mathematical decisions independently.
Build understanding of the relevant IA criteria without writing, rewriting or supplying assessed work.
Course choice

AA and AI, SL and HL: different, not ranked

Choosing a course is a matter of fit with the student’s interests, further study and school advice. There is no universal easier option, and we do not rank grades between them.

Analysis and approaches (AA)

Emphasises algebraic reasoning, proof-style argument and mathematical structure across functions, geometry, statistics and calculus.

Applications and interpretation (AI)

Emphasises modelling, data and technology, with interpretation of results in context across the same five topics.

SL and HL

HL extends the content and adds a further paper. The level changes the depth and the exam structure, not the standing of the course.

Five topics

What the course covers

Number and algebra

Studied in both courses at both levels, with different emphasis and depth. We do not assign topic weights; ask your teacher for the school plan.

Functions

Studied in both courses at both levels, with different emphasis and depth. We do not assign topic weights; ask your teacher for the school plan.

Geometry and trigonometry

Studied in both courses at both levels, with different emphasis and depth. We do not assign topic weights; ask your teacher for the school plan.

Statistics and probability

Studied in both courses at both levels, with different emphasis and depth. We do not assign topic weights; ask your teacher for the school plan.

Calculus

Studied in both courses at both levels, with different emphasis and depth. We do not assign topic weights; ask your teacher for the school plan.

Exams and calculators

Check the subject brief for your session

Verify per session

Papers and calculator use

AA Paper 1 is non-calculator; its other papers use technology. AI uses technology across its papers. Both SL courses have two papers; both HL courses add Paper 3. Confirm exact paper lengths in the subject brief for your exam session before timing practice.

HL Paper 3

HL students sit an additional extended problem-solving paper. Its timing varies between syllabus versions, so check the brief for your session.

Command terms

Words such as write down, find, calculate, show that, justify, hence and determine each demand a different response. Practise reading the command term first.

Course-specific practice

Practise with materials for your own course and level; an AA question and an AI question can look similar and reward different habits.

Internal Assessment

The 20% IA, included in support

The IA is worth 20% for both courses. Two criteria sets exist; use the one for your assessment year.

Through Nov 2028

Current IA: assessed through 2028

Mathematics should be appropriate to the course and level, justified and understood. It does not need to go beyond the course for higher criteria.

  • A Presentation: 4
  • B Mathematical communication: 4
  • C Personal engagement: 3
  • D Reflection: 3
  • E Use of mathematics: 6
  • Total: 20
First teach Aug 2027

Revised IA: first assessment May 2029

Verified on the IB AA updates page and Subject Brief. Students in this cohort should not be assessed against the older table; check the new guide.

  • A Problem specification: 4
  • B Abstraction: 6
  • C Computation: 4
  • D Interpretation: 6
  • Total: 20, same for SL and HL

Use your cohort’s criteria

Personal engagement and reflection are named criteria in the current table. In the revised criteria, evaluate the work through the relevant inquiry stages; do not treat the older criterion names as the new rubric.

Ownership and school rules

The IA is the student’s own work. We explain mathematics and discuss ideas; we do not write or rewrite any part of it. Teacher and school guidance governs.

Educational example, not an IA submission

A model needs interpretation, not only a good fit

A linear model V(t) = 120 - 8t describes the volume of water in a tank, in litres, t minutes after a drain opens. What can the model reasonably tell us?

  1. CalculateAt t = 10, V = 40 litres. Solving V = 0 gives t = 15 minutes.
  2. InterpretThe gradient describes an assumed constant loss of 8 litres per minute; the intercept is the initial volume.
  3. ReflectAt t = 20 the model predicts -40 litres, which is physically impossible. Restrict its meaningful domain and consider whether a constant drainage rate is realistic.

Use separate examples to learn the mathematics. The student must make and explain their own decisions in assessed work; school rules govern all outside assistance.

For parents

How to help at home.

Know your student’s cohort year

Whether the current or revised syllabus and IA applies depends on the first-assessment year.

Ask about the question, not the page

Ask what the student is trying to find out and why the mathematics suits it.

No admissions promises

Predicted grades and offers are decided by schools and universities; no tutor can promise them.

Download the IBDP Maths parent guide (PDF) IBDP Maths deep-dive companion — Volume 2 (PDF)

Start with the parent guide. Volume 2 adds worked practice examples, planning tools and questions to discuss at home. Examples are for learning, not official marking schemes or assessed submissions.

Questions parents ask
Is IA support really included?

Yes. IBDP Mathematics is one offer covering AA and AI at SL and HL, with the IA included.

Will you write or fix our IA?

No. The work remains the student’s own, within teacher and school guidance.

Which IA criteria apply?

Assessment through 2028 uses criteria A to E; first assessment in May 2029 uses the revised criteria. Check your cohort.

Reflect before deciding

Use the course-specific self-check.

Identify concerns and recent practice evidence. No readiness score, grade prediction or email gate.
