IGCSE & A-Level Maths Tutor Dubai

Focused IGCSE and A-Level mathematics tutoring in Dubai · Sharjah · Abu Dhabi · Muscat · London, with support for reasoning, mark-scheme precision, and unfamiliar questions.

The problem behind the mark

Starting unfamiliar exam questions.

A mark scheme can show where marks were lost, but it does not always show why the student chose that route. The work starts by making the reasoning visible.

The 45-minute diagnostic helps us understand how the student approaches unfamiliar questions before recommending support.

FOCUSED SUPPORT / NOT GENERIC HOMEWORK HELP

What the work can focus on

Read a multi-step question for structure before starting the algebra.
Use mark-scheme language without turning the method into imitation.
Move between routine practice and unfamiliar applications.
Build a focused response to the observed reasoning gap.
IGCSE support

International GCSE mathematics

Identify the exact syllabus, code, tier and exam year, not only the board name.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended tiers. Confirm the tier and the syllabus year for your exam session.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1

Foundation and Higher tiers. Confirm the tier and the specification year.

UK GCSE is a different qualification

GCSE and IGCSE are separate. We do not imply AQA or OCR IGCSE offers; name the exact qualification your school entered.

AS and A-Level support

Distinct from IGCSE, same offer

Cambridge International AS and A Level Mathematics 9709

AS has three routes: Pure Mathematics only; Pure Mathematics and Mechanics; or Pure Mathematics and Probability & Statistics. Full A-Level routes differ. Confirm the component combination and progression rules in the specification for your examination year.

Pearson International A Level (IAL)

Pure, statistics and mechanics units, depending on your entry. Confirm unit codes with your school.

Pearson UK A-Level 9MA0

Pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics are compulsory in this UK qualification. Other A-Level routes have their own component combinations; confirm your exact entry.

Transition

IGCSE to A-Level, and the algebra underneath

Algebra foundations

Fractions, surds, indices and rearranging formulae are used in AS pure mathematics. Review these skills alongside the demands of the named course; they are not the only factors affecting a student’s progress.

Reasoning expectations

A-Level questions more often ask for proof, justification and unstructured problems than IGCSE does.

Mark schemes

M, A, B marks and follow-through

M marks

Method marks reward a valid attempt at the required approach, even if later arithmetic slips.

A marks

Accuracy marks usually depend on the relevant method mark being earned.

B marks

Independent marks for a correct result or statement not tied to a method.

Conditional follow-through (ft)

Some questions allow a mark for correct work following an earlier error. The guidance is written per question and board.

When working is required

A correct answer can imply method in many questions. Show that, prove, and questions that demand a specified method require the evidence to be shown. Valid alternative methods are normally accepted unless a method is demanded. Read the board’s own mark scheme rules.

Worked mark example

Minimum point of a quadratic

Find the coordinates of the minimum point of y = 3x^2 - 12x + 5.

  1. Differentiatedy/dx = 6x - 12M1 for an attempt to differentiate; A1 for correct
  2. Set to zero6x - 12 = 0, so x = 2M1 for setting dy/dx = 0 and solving; A1 x = 2
  3. Find yy = 12 - 24 + 5 = -7A1ft for y from their x, if the substitution is correct
  4. Justify the minimumThe coefficient of x^2 is positive, so the parabola opens upwards. Its stationary point (2, -7) is the minimum.

Illustrative only. Mark codes, allocation and follow-through wording differ across boards and questions. Completing the square would be an acceptable alternative here unless the question demanded calculus.

For parents

How to help at home.

Know the exact code

Ask the school for qualification, code, tier and exam year.

Read mark schemes together

Look at where method marks sat, not only the total.

Download the IGCSE and A-Level parent guide (PDF) IGCSE and A-Level deep-dive companion — Volume 2 (PDF)

Start with the parent guide. Volume 2 adds worked practice examples, planning tools and questions to discuss at home. Examples are for learning, not official marking schemes or assessed submissions.

Questions parents ask
Does no working mean no marks?

Not always. Some answers earn marks without working, but show-that, proof and demanded-method questions need the evidence.

Will a method from another board lose marks?

Valid alternative methods are normally accepted unless the question demands a method.

Is IGCSE the same as GCSE?

No. They are different qualifications; identify yours exactly.

Reflect before deciding

Use the course-specific self-check.

Identify concerns and recent practice evidence. No readiness score, grade prediction or email gate.

After the diagnostic, you receive a written report within 24 hours. The recommendation follows the evidence; it is not a default package.
